About Roy Sievers
Roy Sievers was signed out of a St. Louis high school in 1944 by his hometown Browns, mashing 34 homers for the Hannibal Pilots in 1947 before reaching the majors. Debuting in 1949, the right-handed slugger and part-time left fielder captured the inaugural American League Rookie of the Year Award that season, batting .306 with 16 home runs and 91 RBI. He spent 17 seasons (1949-1965) with the Browns, Washington Senators, Chicago White Sox, and Phillies, earning five All-Star selections. His finest year came in 1957 with Washington, when he led the AL in both home runs (42) and RBI (114) while hitting .301. Nicknamed "Squirrel" as a schoolboy basketball star, Sievers retired a .267 hitter with 318 home runs, 1,703 hits, and 1,147 RBI over 1,887 games. This 1953 Topps card, a series-one double-print, captures him during his final year in a Browns uniform.
