About Del Rice
Delbert Rice signed with the St. Louis Cardinals as an amateur free agent in 1941 and, after four seasons in the minor leagues, debuted on May 2, 1945. A right-handed catcher, he carved out a 17-year major-league career (1945-1961) on the strength of his defense, playing for the Cardinals (1945-1955, 1960), Milwaukee Braves (1955-1959), Chicago Cubs (1960), Baltimore Orioles (1960), and the expansion Los Angeles Angels (1961), for whom he was the first player ever signed. A light hitter, Rice batted .237 with 908 hits, 79 home runs, and 441 RBI over 1,309 games, but he was prized for his work with pitchers and led National League catchers in fielding percentage in 1948 and 1949. He won two World Series rings, catching all three of Harry Brecheen's victories for the 1946 champion Cardinals and starting for the 1957 champion Braves, and he was named to the 1953 All-Star team, fittingly the same year as this card, though a finger injury kept him out of the game. Rice later coached and managed in the majors, guiding the California Angels in 1972.
