About Enos Slaughter
A hard-charging right fielder from Roxboro, North Carolina, Enos Slaughter was signed out of textile-mill semipro ball into the St. Louis Cardinals organization in 1935, and after tearing through the minors (he hit .382 for Columbus in 1936) reached the majors in 1938. He played 19 seasons (1938-1959) for the Cardinals, Yankees, Kansas City Athletics, and Milwaukee Braves, batting .300 with 2,383 hits, 169 home runs, and 1,304 RBI. A ten-time All-Star, he led the National League in hits, batting average (.318), and triples in 1942 and won four World Series titles (1942, 1946, 1956, 1958). Nicknamed "Country" for his rural upbringing — a tag manager Burt Shotton hung on him in the minors — Slaughter is immortalized for the "Mad Dash" in Game 7 of the 1946 Series, racing home from first on Harry Walker's hit to score the Series-winning run ahead of Johnny Pesky's relay. He was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1985. This card, #41 in the 1953 Topps set, captures him mid-career with St. Louis.
