1953 Topps #69 Dick Brodowski

About Dick Brodowski
Richard Stanley "Dick" Brodowski (July 26, 1932 – January 14, 2019), a right-handed pitcher from Bayonne, New Jersey, was signed by Boston Red Sox scout Bill McCarren in 1951 as a third baseman, then converted to the mound after injuries wrecked his Marion (minor-league) club's staff. He debuted with Boston on June 14, 1952, at age 19, and went 5-5 with a 4.41 ERA and four complete games as a rookie — including a four-hit, 4-3 win over the pennant-bound Yankees that drew praise from Hall of Fame catcher Yogi Berra. Military service in the U.S. Army at Fort Dix, New Jersey, cost him the 1953-54 seasons, and he was never as sharp afterward. He pitched for the Red Sox (1952, 1955), Washington Senators (1956-57), and Cleveland Indians (1958-59), finishing 9-11 with a 4.76 ERA, five saves, and 85 strikeouts over 72 games and 215⅔ innings. His 1953 Topps card (#69) carries no documented printing error.
