1953 Topps #32 Clyde Vollmer

About Clyde Vollmer
Signed by the Cincinnati Reds in 1939, right-handed outfielder Clyde Vollmer announced himself in unforgettable fashion: in his major-league debut on May 31, 1942, he homered off Max Butcher in his first at-bat to win the game 3-0. He went on to play 10 big-league seasons (1942, 1946-1954) for the Reds, Washington Senators, and Boston Red Sox, finishing with a .251 average, 508 hits, 69 home runs, and 339 RBI over 685 games. His signature stretch came in July 1951 with Boston, when a torrid three-week tear (July 6-28) produced 31 hits, 13 homers, and 40 RBI in 21 games and earned him the enduring nickname "Dutch the Clutch." That surge included a three-home-run game against the White Sox at Fenway Park on July 26, making him the first Red Sox right-handed batter to homer three times in a game at Fenway. He set career highs that season with 22 home runs and 85 RBI. Vollmer, a Cincinnati native, was never a Hall of Famer, but his "Clyde's July" remains one of the great one-month hot streaks in Red Sox lore.
