About Bobby Young
Robert George "Bobby" Young was a slick-fielding, left-handed-hitting second baseman signed out of Maryland by Cardinals scout Benny Borgmann in 1946, reportedly recruited between halves of a basketball game. A World War II Marine veteran, he hit .347 with a league-leading 16 triples in his first pro season at Allentown and, in 1950, set an International League record by handling 329 consecutive chances without an error, surpassing Jackie Robinson's mark of 301. After three games with St. Louis in 1948, he became the Browns' regular second baseman from 1951 to 1953, leading American League second basemen in double plays in both 1951 and 1952. Nicknamed "The Razor" for his lean build, he moved with the franchise to Baltimore, becoming the first player to sign with the modern Orioles in 1954 and stroking the first double in a major-league game at Memorial Stadium. Young played eight seasons through 1958 for the Cardinals, Browns/Orioles, Indians, and Phillies, batting .249 with 15 home runs and 137 RBI over 687 games.
