About Bob Keegan

A Rochester, New York native and Bucknell University product who served in the U.S. Army during World War II, Bob Keegan was a right-handed pitcher signed by Yankees scout Lou Maguolo, beginning his pro career in the minors in 1946 at age 25. His path to the majors was long: he did not debut until 1953 with the Chicago White Sox, at roughly age 32, and this 1953 Topps card is his rookie-year issue. Keegan spent his entire six-season big-league career (1953-1958) with the White Sox, going 40-36 with a 3.66 ERA, 198 strikeouts, and six shutouts over 135 games. He was selected to the American League All-Star team in 1954. His signature moment came on August 20, 1957, when he no-hit the Washington Senators 6-0 in the second game of a doubleheader at Comiskey Park, walking two and striking out one. It was the majors' first no-hitter since Don Larsen's 1956 World Series perfect game, ended a 20-year White Sox no-hitter drought dating to Bill Dietrich in 1937, and made Keegan the oldest pitcher in franchise history to throw one. He died in his hometown of Rochester in 2001.
