About Joe Dobson

Joseph Gordon Dobson was a right-handed pitcher who overcame losing his left thumb and forefinger in a childhood dynamite-cap accident at age nine to reach the majors. Born in 1917 in Durant, Oklahoma, he entered pro ball in 1937 with the Troy Trojans of the Alabama-Florida League and debuted with the Cleveland Indians in 1939. He pitched 14 seasons for Cleveland (1939-40), the Boston Red Sox (1941-43, 1946-50, 1954), and the Chicago White Sox (1951-53) — the club shown on this 1953 card — finishing 137-103 with a 3.62 ERA and 992 strikeouts over 414 games. A 1948 All-Star, his signature moment came in the 1946 World Series, when he threw a low-hit complete-game victory in Game 5 to put Boston up three games to two (all of St. Louis's runs were unearned). His best year was 1947, going 18-8 with a September one-hitter. He was later inducted into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2012 and died in 1994.
