1953 Topps #72 Fred Hutchinson
1953 Topps #72 Fred Hutchinson

About Fred Hutchinson
Fred Hutchinson entered pro ball with his hometown Seattle Rainiers of the Pacific Coast League, where in 1938 he won a league-best 25 games and was named The Sporting News Minor League Player of the Year, prompting Detroit to acquire him for cash and players. A control-oriented right-handed pitcher, "Hutch" reached the Tigers in 1939 and spent his entire 11-season major-league career in Detroit (1939-40, then 1946-53 after Navy service in World War II), going 95-71 with a 3.73 ERA and 591 strikeouts, with 18- and 17-win seasons in 1947 and 1950. He appeared in the 1940 World Series and was an American League All-Star in 1951. This 1953 Topps card (#72) captures him as the Tigers' player-manager, a role he held in 1952-53 before managing Detroit outright in 1954; some copies carry a minor back variation with the biography printed in white text rather than black. He later managed the Cardinals and the Reds, winning NL Manager of the Year twice (1957, 1961) and guiding Cincinnati to the 1961 National League pennant. Also called "The Big Bear" by broadcaster Joe Garagiola for his fierce temperament, Hutchinson died of lung cancer on November 12, 1964, at age 45; the Hutch Award and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center carry his name.
