1953 Topps #113 Jerry Priddy
1953 Topps #113 Jerry Priddy

About Jerry Priddy
Signed off a Los Angeles sandlot by Yankees scout Bill Essick, Gerald "Jerry" Priddy climbed the New York farm system as the double-play partner of future Hall of Fame shortstop Phil Rizzuto—fittingly, Rizzuto is the very next card (#114) in this set. The pair starred together at Norfolk and with the 1939-40 Kansas City Blues, where Priddy hit .333 and led the league in doubles. A right-handed second baseman, he reached the majors in 1941 and played 11 seasons (1941-1953) for the Yankees, Washington Senators, St. Louis Browns, and finally the Detroit Tigers pictured here. He was a member of the Yankees' 1941 World Series champions and built a reputation as one of the era's finest gloves: with Detroit in 1950 he turned a then-record 150 double plays in a season and once started five in a single game. Priddy retired with a .265 average, 1,252 hits, 61 home runs, and 541 RBI. Historian Bill James later devoted a chapter to him, judging his skills the equal of Bill Mazeroski's. On this card, note a minor printing variation—the back biography appears in either black or white text.

White-text biography
A minor printing variation: on some copies the back biography is printed in white text, on others in black text. Catalogued by TCDB (and noted by price guides for the series-2 range) but considered a minor variation, not a headline.
