About Ned Garver
A right-handed pitcher from Ney, Ohio, Ned Garver signed with the St. Louis Browns organization in 1944 after starring in semipro ball, going 21-8 with a no-hitter in the minors before debuting in the majors on April 28, 1948. Over 14 seasons he pitched for the Browns (1948-52), Detroit Tigers (1952-56)—the club shown on this card—Kansas City Athletics (1957-60), and Los Angeles Angels (1961), compiling a 129-157 record, a 3.73 ERA, 881 strikeouts, and 153 complete games. His signature year came in 1951, when he went 20-12 for a Browns team that lost 102 games; he and Irv Young remain the only modern-era pitchers to win 20 for a 100-loss club. Casey Stengel picked him to start the 1951 All-Star Game, and Garver, a fine hitter for a pitcher (.218 career, seven homers), batted .305 that season. A pinched vertebra in 1952 sapped his velocity, forcing him to survive on guile and varied arm angles. This #112 exists with the back biography printed in either black or white text, a minor cataloged series-2 variation. Garver later served as mayor of his hometown and died in 2017 at age 91.
