1953 Topps #211 J.W. Porter
1953 Topps #211 J.W. Porter

About J.W. Porter
A hard-hitting catcher whose initials stood for nothing at all, J.W. "Jay" Porter was one of the most hyped amateurs of his day. The Chicago White Sox signed the Oakland-area prodigy in December 1950 for a reported $67,500 bonus, a staggering sum after the majors abolished the bonus rule. He delivered immediately in the minors, hitting .302 with 15 homers at Waterloo to earn 1951 Three-I League Rookie of the Year honors. Traded to the St. Louis Browns, Porter debuted July 30, 1952 at age 19 — days before a car crash killed his young wife, a tragedy owner Bill Veeck personally helped him through. Over parts of six seasons (1952-1959) he played for five clubs — the Browns, Detroit Tigers (1955-57), Cleveland Indians, Washington Senators, and St. Louis Cardinals — chiefly behind the plate but also in the outfield and at first and third. He hit .228 with 8 home runs and 62 RBIs across 229 games, peaking at .250 for Detroit in 1957. Browns legend Satchel Paige nicknamed the red-haired, freckled youngster "Firefly." This #211 card, listing him with the Tigers, is Porter's rookie card in the 1953 Topps set.
