About Bob Cerv
A slugging left fielder from Weston, Nebraska, Bob Cerv (1925-2017) starred at the University of Nebraska, where he was named the school's first baseball All-American after batting .444 as a senior, and signed with the Yankees in 1950. He debuted in 1951 and spent 12 seasons (1951-1962) with the Yankees, Kansas City Athletics, Los Angeles Angels, and Houston Colt .45s. A career .276 hitter with 105 home runs, 374 RBI, and 624 hits over 829 games, Cerv was mostly a pinch-hitter and platoon outfielder in New York, appearing in three World Series and earning a ring on the 1956 champions. Sold to Kansas City, he broke out in 1958 with a .305 average, 38 home runs (still a franchise record), and 104 RBI, starting the All-Star Game over Ted Williams and finishing fourth in MVP voting; famously, he hammered several of those homers with his jaw wired shut after a home-plate collision. In 1961 he shared a Queens apartment with Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle during their run at Babe Ruth's record. This is his Topps rookie card.
