About Jim Greengrass

A power-hitting outfielder, Jim Greengrass signed with the New York Yankees at age 16 in 1944, during World War II, and spent nearly seven seasons in the minors before the Yankees traded him to Cincinnati on August 28, 1952 — the deal, involving three other players and cash, that sent star pitcher Ewell Blackwell to New York. Greengrass promptly broke through in 1953, his rookie season and the year of this card, starting 153 games in left field, belting 20 home runs, driving in 100 runs, and finishing sixth in National League Rookie of the Year voting. In 1954 he set a personal best with 27 home runs and, on Opening Day (April 13, 1954), stroked four doubles to tie Pop Dillon's record for most two-base hits in a season opener. Phlebitis in his legs derailed his career, and after a mid-1955 trade to the Phillies he retired following the 1956 season. Over five seasons (1952–1956) with the Reds/Redlegs and Phillies he batted .269 with 482 hits, 69 home runs, and 282 RBI in 504 games. Born October 24, 1927, in Addison, New York, he died in 2019.
