About Joe Nuxhall
Joe Nuxhall signed his first pro contract with the Cincinnati Reds on February 18, 1944, at age 14, and on June 10, 1944 the left-hander took the mound at 15 years and 316 days old — still the youngest player ever to appear in a major-league game, a call-up made possible by World War II roster shortages. Farmed out for years afterward, he returned to stay in 1952 and pitched 16 big-league seasons, mostly with the Reds (1944, 1952-60, 1962-66) plus stops with the Kansas City Athletics (1961) and Los Angeles Angels (1962). A two-time NL All-Star (1955-56), he peaked in 1955 at 17-12 with a 3.47 ERA and a league-best five shutouts, finishing his career 135-117 with a 3.90 ERA and 1,372 strikeouts. After retiring he broadcast Reds games for some 40 years, earning the nickname "The Ol' Left-hander" for his sign-off, "This is the old left-hander, rounding third and heading for home." He died in 2007. This series-2 double-print exists with a minor printing variation — the back biography appears in white text on some copies and black on others.
