About Andy Seminick
A product of Pennsylvania's coal country, Andy Seminick left the mines to chase baseball and signed with the Pirates organization in 1940, reaching the majors as a catcher with the Philadelphia Phillies in September 1943. Over 15 seasons he played for the Phillies (1943-1951 and 1955-1957) and the Cincinnati Reds/Redlegs (1952-1954), batting right and throwing right. He was the everyday catcher and a clubhouse leader for the 1950 "Whiz Kids," Philadelphia's first pennant winner since 1915, turning in his best year at .288 with 24 home runs and 68 RBI. As the veteran anchor of that youthful staff, writers dubbed him "Grandpa Whiz" because at 29 he was the club's old man. A fan-voted National League starting catcher, he was famously tough: on August 12, 1950 he sparked a wild brawl by bowling over the Giants' infield, and late that season he played the World Series on a badly injured ankle numbed by Novocain. He finished with a .243 average, 953 hits, 164 home runs, and 556 RBI over 1,304 games, later managing and scouting in the Phillies system for decades. His series-two card is a double print and exists with the back biography printed in either black or white text.
