About Herman Wehmeier
A Cincinnati native, right-handed pitcher Herman "Herm" Wehmeier signed with his hometown Reds straight out of Western Hills High School in 1945, tabbed a "surefire star" by manager Bill McKechnie. He debuted at 18 and spent 13 major-league seasons (1945, 1947-1958) with the Reds/Redlegs, Philadelphia Phillies, St. Louis Cardinals, and Detroit Tigers, working mostly as a starter. Plagued by wildness, he led the National League in walks three times (1949, 1950, 1952) and also topped the league in wild pitches and hit batsmen, finishing 92-108 with a 4.80 ERA, 794 strikeouts, and 79 complete games. He was famously winless against the Cardinals (0-14) before St. Louis acquired him—then, on September 29, 1956, he out-dueled Warren Spahn for 12 innings as Stan Musial scored the winning run, a pennant-race classic that helped knock the Braves from the race. He later scouted for Cincinnati and recommended signing fellow Western Hills product Pete Rose. Wehmeier died in 1973 at age 46 of a heart attack while testifying at a Dallas trial. This #110 card is known for a minor printing variation with the back biography in either white or black text.
