1953 Topps #104 Yogi Berra
1953 Topps #104 Yogi Berra
Yogi Berra, a single-printed New York star and one of the tougher low-number commons.

About Yogi Berra
One of the greatest catchers in baseball history, Lawrence "Yogi" Berra was signed by the New York Yankees for a $500 bonus in 1943 out of St. Louis' Italian "Hill" neighborhood, broke in with the minor-league Norfolk Tars, then served in the Navy as a gunner's mate off Normandy on D-Day before reaching the majors in 1946. Over 19 seasons (1946–1963, plus a brief 1965 cameo with the Mets), almost all in Yankee pinstripes, he batted .285 with 2,150 hits, 358 home runs, and 1,430 RBI. An 18-time All-Star and one of only a handful of players to win the American League MVP three times (1951, 1954, 1955), Berra anchored the Yankees' dynasty and won 10 World Series titles as a player—still the most of any player in history. He caught Don Larsen's perfect game in the 1956 Series, leaping into his arms at the final out. His nickname came from a boyhood friend who thought he resembled a Hindu yogi sitting cross-legged; he later became famous for his "Yogi-isms." Berra was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1972. On this single-printed low number—one of the tougher 1953 commons—the back biography is known in both black-text and white-text printings, a minor catalogued variation.

White-text biography
A minor printing variation: on some copies the back biography is printed in white text, on others in black text. Catalogued by TCDB (and noted by price guides for the series-2 range) but considered a minor variation, not a headline.
