About Mickey Mantle
Signed by Yankees scout Tom Greenwade in 1949, Mickey Mantle tore through the low minors — winning a batting title at Class-C Joplin — before reaching New York in 1951 at age 19. He spent his entire 18-season career (1951-1968) with the Yankees, playing primarily center field and switch-hitting with legendary power. A 20-time All-Star, Mantle won three American League MVP awards (1956, 1957, 1962) and the 1956 Triple Crown (.353, 52 HR, 130 RBI). He anchored seven World Series champions and still holds Series records with 18 home runs, 42 runs, and 40 RBI. Mantle finished at .298 with 536 home runs, 1,509 RBI, and 2,415 hits, earning first-ballot Hall of Fame election in 1974. Nicknamed "The Commerce Comet" for the northeastern Oklahoma mining town where he grew up (and "The Mick"), he remains the face of the Yankee dynasty. This #82 is the key to the 1953 set — a single-print in his prime — though his true rookie is the 1951 Bowman.
