About Allie Reynolds
A member of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation from Oklahoma, Allie Reynolds signed with the Cleveland Indians for a $1,000 bonus and reached the majors in 1942. After five seasons in Cleveland (1942-1946), he was traded to the New York Yankees for second baseman Joe Gordon and became a cornerstone of their dynasty, pitching in New York from 1947 to 1954. A hard-throwing right-hander who worked as both starter and reliever, Reynolds was a six-time All-Star and a six-time World Series champion (1947, 1949-1953), going 7-2 with a 2.79 ERA in October. In 1951 he became the first American League pitcher to throw two no-hitters in one season, beating Bob Feller 1-0 on July 12 and Boston 8-0 on September 28, the finale sealed when Yogi Berra dropped Ted Williams's foul pop before Reynolds retired him again. He led the AL in ERA in 1952 (2.06) and finished 182-107 with a 3.30 ERA and 1,423 strikeouts. Broadcaster Mel Allen dubbed him "Super Chief," a nod to his Creek heritage. This #141 card is noted for a minor back-bio printing variation, with the biography text appearing in either black or white on different copies.
