About Irv Noren
Signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1946 for a $5,000 bonus, Irv Noren was a left-handed-hitting outfielder who first starred in other arenas: he played pro basketball alongside Jackie Robinson with the Los Angeles Red Devils and briefly with the NBL's Chicago American Gears before Branch Rickey ordered him to focus on baseball. After winning 1949 Pacific Coast League MVP honors with the Hollywood Stars (.330, 29 HR, 130 RBI), his contract was sold to the Washington Senators, and he hit .295 with 98 RBI as a 1950 rookie. On May 3, 1952 Washington traded him to the New York Yankees in the deal that sent Jackie Jensen the other way. Noren was a member of the Yankees' 1952, 1953 and 1956 World Series champions and started four games in center field during the 1955 Series. His finest year came in 1954, when he earned his lone All-Star selection and batted a career-high .319. Over 11 seasons (1950-1960) with six clubs, "Kid Noren" hit .275 with 857 hits, 65 home runs and 453 RBI in 1,093 games. He later coached third base for Charlie Finley's dynasty Oakland A's, part of the 1972 and 1973 world champions under Dick Williams.
