About Johnny Sain

Signed by the Red Sox as a teenager and seasoned through six minor-league years before the Boston Braves bought his contract in March 1942, Johnny Sain (1917-2006) was a right-handed pitcher who debuted that April and worked 11 major-league seasons with the Braves (1942, 1946-51), New York Yankees (1951-55)—the club on this series-2 card, acquired in a 1951 trade for Lew Burdette—and Kansas City Athletics (1955). A three-time All-Star (1947, 1948, 1953), he finished 139-116 with a 3.49 ERA and 910 strikeouts. His signature 1948 season—24-15, leading the NL in wins, starts, complete games (28) and innings (314⅔), and MVP runner-up to Stan Musial—powered Boston's pennant and produced the enduring rhyme "Spahn and Sain and pray for rain," coined by Boston Post writer Gerry Hern. In the 1948 World Series opener he beat Bob Feller 1-0, decided by the famously disputed Masi pickoff call at second. As a Yankee reliever he won three straight titles (1951-53) and led the AL with 22 saves in 1954, later becoming one of baseball's most respected pitching coaches. This card carries a minor series-2 variation with the back biography printed in either black or white text.
