About Gil McDougald

Signed by the New York Yankees in the spring of 1948 and seasoned in the minors, Gil McDougald reached the majors on April 20, 1951 and spent his entire 10-year career (1951-1960) in pinstripes. A versatile right-handed infielder, he logged extensive time at second base, third base, and shortstop, a flexibility that made him one of manager Casey Stengel's most valuable pieces. McDougald won the 1951 American League Rookie of the Year award, edging Minnie Minoso, and that same fall became the first rookie ever to hit a grand slam in a World Series. He was named an All-Star six times (1952 and 1956-1959) and played on eight AL pennant winners and five World Series champions (1951, 1952, 1953, 1956, and 1958). For his career he batted .276 with 1,291 hits, 112 home runs, and 576 RBI. He is also remembered for a May 7, 1957 line drive that struck Cleveland pitcher Herb Score in the face; McDougald himself suffered permanent hearing loss traced to a batting-practice liner, and he retired after 1960 at age 32. Born in San Francisco in 1928, he died in 2010.
