About Howie Pollet

A left-handed control artist out of New Orleans, Howard "Howie" Pollet was signed for the St. Louis Cardinals by manager Eddie Dyer and dominated the 1941 Texas League with the Houston Buffaloes (20 of 23 decisions, league-best 1.16 ERA and 151 strikeouts). Over 14 major-league seasons (1941-1956) he pitched for the Cardinals, Pirates, Cubs and White Sox, earning three All-Star selections (1943, 1946, 1949) and twice leading the National League in ERA (1.75 in 1943, 2.10 in 1946). His 1946 masterpiece, a league-high 21 wins and 266 innings, powered St. Louis to the pennant and a seven-game World Series triumph over the Red Sox, in which Pollet won Game One; he finished fourth in the NL MVP vote. He missed 1944-45 serving in the Army Air Forces. Teammates dubbed him "Eddie Dyer's boy" for his bond with his mentor. Traded to Pittsburgh in June 1951 (his club on this card), he finished 131-116 with a 3.51 ERA and 934 strikeouts, later serving as the Cardinals' pitching coach (1959-1964).
