About Forrest Main
Forrest Harry "Woody" Main was a lanky 6-foot-3 right-handed pitcher who spent his entire major-league career with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Born February 12, 1922, in Delano, California, he first signed with the New York Yankees and pitched in their farm system (1941-42, 1946-47) before serving in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. When former Kansas City Blues manager Billy Meyer took over the Pirates, he plucked Main in the Rule 5 draft, and Main divided the next several years between Pittsburgh and the Triple-A Indianapolis Indians. He appeared in the majors in 1948, 1950, and 1952-53, debuting April 21, 1948, and finishing on April 28, 1953. His finest year was 1952, when he led the Pirates with 48 appearances and notched two saves; on June 17 that season he beat the defending NL-champion New York Giants 6-2 with a complete game at the Polo Grounds. Over 79 big-league games he went 4-13 with a 5.14 ERA, 107 strikeouts, and 204 2/3 innings. This 1953 Topps card (#198) lists him by his formal first name, "Forrest," though he was universally known as "Woody." He died June 27, 1992, in Whittier, California.
