About Ralph Kiner
Ralph Kiner (1922–2014) was the National League's premier slugger of the early postwar years and one of the game's great home-run hitters. He debuted with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1946 and, tutored by Hank Greenberg, blossomed into a left fielder who led or shared the NL home-run crown for seven straight seasons (1946–1952), a feat no one had done before and none has matched since. He belted a career-high 54 homers in 1949 and earned six consecutive All-Star selections (1948–1953). Traded to the Cubs, then the Indians, back trouble forced his retirement after 1955 with 369 home runs, 1,015 RBI, and a .279 average over just ten seasons. The short left-field porch at Forbes Field became known as "Kiner's Korner," a name he later carried into a beloved second career as a New York Mets broadcaster from the club's 1962 birth until his death, hosting the postgame show of the same name. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1975.
