About Wally Westlake
Waldon Thomas "Wally" Westlake (born November 8, 1920, in Gridley, California; died September 5, 2019, at age 98) was a right-handed outfielder who signed with Brooklyn as an amateur free agent in 1940 after a tryout camp, then honed his game in the Pacific Coast League under Casey Stengel before the Pittsburgh Pirates purchased him in 1946. He reached the majors in 1947 and played 10 seasons (1947-1956) for the Pirates, Cardinals, Reds, Indians, Orioles, and Phillies. Westlake's best years came in Pittsburgh, where he hit 23 homers with 104 RBI in 1949 and 24 homers in 1950, and where he hit for the cycle twice, on July 30, 1948, against Brooklyn and June 14, 1949, against the Boston Braves. He was named to the 1951 National League All-Star team. A reserve outfielder on the 1954 Cleveland Indians club that won a then-AL-record 111 games, he appeared in that year's World Series, which the Giants swept. Over 958 games he batted .272 with 848 hits, 127 home runs, and 539 RBI.
