About Jim Hegan

Signed by the Cleveland Indians in 1938 out of Lynn, Massachusetts, catcher Jim Hegan reached the majors in September 1941 and, after wartime service, anchored Cleveland's plate for the better part of 17 big-league seasons (1941-42, 1946-60). A five-time All-Star (1947, 1949-52), Hegan was a light hitter — .228 average, 1,087 hits, 92 home runs, and 525 RBI over 1,666 games — but he was celebrated as one of the finest defensive catchers and game-callers of his era, guiding pitching staffs that led the American League in ERA six times. He caught the 1948 world champions (beating the Boston Braves) and the 1954 pennant winners, whose World Series he lost in a sweep to the Giants after a Game One drive was knocked down by the wind into Monte Irvin's glove. Hegan handled no-hitters by Don Black, Bob Lemon, and Bob Feller, prompting Bill Dickey's line, "If I had been able to catch like Hegan I wouldn't have needed to hit." He was inducted into the Cleveland Indians Hall of Fame in 1966; his son Mike Hegan was also a major-league All-Star.
