1953 Topps #101 Ted Wilks
1953 Topps #101 Ted Wilks

About Ted Wilks
A right-handed pitcher from Fulton, New York, Ted Wilks was signed by the St. Louis Cardinals out of a 1937 tryout camp and spent six seasons in the minors (Rochester, Houston, Columbus) before debuting in 1944 as a 28-year-old rookie. He arrived with a bang, going 17-4 with an 11-game winning streak to help the Cardinals win the 1944 World Series over the crosstown Browns. After elbow trouble and 1945 surgery, manager Eddie Dyer converted him to relief, and Wilks became one of the National League's premier firemen, twice leading the league in appearances and saves and helping St. Louis take the 1946 title over the Red Sox. He also pitched for the Pirates and, finally, the Cleveland Indians (1952-53), the team on this 1953 Topps card. Over ten seasons he went 59-30 with a 3.26 ERA, 46 saves, and 403 strikeouts across 385 games, 341 in relief. Catcher Joe Garagiola nicknamed him "The Cork" for all the opposing rallies he corked up. He died in 1989. This card is known with a minor printing variation, the back biography appearing in white or black text.
