About Dixie Walker
Fred "Dixie" Walker, pictured on his 1953 Topps card as a St. Louis Cardinals coach, was one of the National League's most popular hitters of the 1940s. Signed by the New York Yankees in 1930, the right fielder debuted in 1931 and played 18 major-league seasons for the Yankees, White Sox, Tigers, Brooklyn Dodgers, and Pirates, batting .306 with 2,064 hits, 105 home runs, and 1,023 RBI. He blossomed in Brooklyn (1939-1947), where his popularity at Ebbets Field earned him the nickname "the People's Cherce" (Brooklyn dialect for "the People's Choice"). A five-time All-Star (1943-1947), Walker won the 1944 NL batting title at .357 and led the league with 124 RBI in 1945. His legacy is complicated: in 1947 he asked Branch Rickey to trade him rather than play alongside Jackie Robinson, though he later acknowledged Robinson's greatness. He joined the Cardinals' coaching staff in 1953 before moving into managing and scouting. His father Ewart "Dixie" Walker pitched for the Senators, and brother Harry "the Hat" Walker was also an NL batting champion. Walker died in 1982.
