1953 Topps #208 Jim Wilson

About Jim Wilson
Jim Wilson was a right-handed pitcher signed out of the Pacific Northwest by Boston Red Sox scout Ernie Johnson in 1943 after attending San Diego State. He reached the majors with the Red Sox in 1945, but that August a Hank Greenberg line drive smashed into his head and fractured his skull, an injury a surgeon believed would end his career; Wilson recovered fully and returned to pitch. Over 12 big-league seasons (1945-1958) he pitched for the Red Sox, Browns, Athletics, Boston/Milwaukee Braves (1951-1954), Orioles and White Sox, finishing 86-89 with a 4.01 ERA and 692 strikeouts. A three-time All-Star, his defining moment came on June 12, 1954, when he no-hit the Phillies 2-0 at County Stadium, the first no-hitter in Milwaukee's major-league history, out-dueling future Hall of Famer Robin Roberts. That year the Philadelphia sportswriters named him "America's Most Courageous Athlete." After retiring he became a respected scout and executive, signing Jim Palmer, serving as Brewers GM, and becoming the first Executive Director of the MLB Scouting Bureau. He died in 1986.
