About Jim Pendleton
Card #185 captures the rookie season of James Edward Pendleton (1924-1996), a right-handed outfielder born in St. Charles, Missouri. Pendleton broke into pro ball in the Negro leagues, playing shortstop for the Chicago American Giants and hitting .301 in 1948 before spending 1949-1952 in the Brooklyn Dodgers' minor-league system. A four-team trade in February 1953 sent him to the Milwaukee Braves, where he debuted at 29. He announced himself on August 30, 1953, launching three home runs in a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates to become just the second rookie in major-league history to do so, joining Braves teammate Eddie Mathews. Pendleton batted .299 as a part-time outfielder that year. Over eight seasons (1953-1962) with the Braves, Pirates, Reds, and the inaugural 1962 Houston Colt .45s, he appeared in 444 games and hit .255 with 19 home runs and 97 RBI.
