About Murray Wall
Murray Wesley Wall (September 19, 1926 - October 8, 1971) was a right-handed relief pitcher signed by the Boston Braves in June 1950 as a free agent out of the University of Texas, where he was a two-time College Baseball All-America (1949-50) and helped the Longhorns to back-to-back College World Series titles. A Dallas native, Wall pitched years in the minors (posting seasons like 15-5 in 1951 and 16-7 in 1956) before his 1953 Topps card appeared while he was in the Braves organization, the franchise's first year in Milwaukee. He broke through with the Boston Red Sox (1957-59), going 3-0 in 1957 and 8-9 in 1958 while working almost exclusively out of the bullpen. Over four major-league seasons he compiled a 13-14 record with a 4.20 ERA, 13 saves, and 82 strikeouts across 91 appearances (only one start). His oddest moment came in 1959: traded to the Washington Senators on June 11 in a deal for Dick Hyde, Wall pitched one game for Washington before being returned to Boston on June 14 when Hyde's sore arm voided the swap. He died in 1971 at age 45.
