About Bill Bruton
A speedy center fielder, Bill Bruton (1925-1995) reached pro ball through his father-in-law, Negro Leagues Hall of Famer Judy Johnson, whose connections led Boston Braves scout Jack Ogden to sign him in 1950. After tearing up the minors at Eau Claire, Denver, and Milwaukee, Bruton debuted as a 27-year-old rookie in 1953 -- the year of this, his first Topps card -- and became an instant Milwaukee hero, homering in the 10th inning to win the Braves' first home game after their move from Boston. Over 12 seasons with the Braves (1953-1960) and Detroit Tigers (1961-1964), he batted .273 with 94 home runs, 545 RBI, and 207 stolen bases. Bruton led the National League in steals three straight years (1953-1955), paced the league in triples twice (1956, 1960), and in runs scored (1960). A knee injury cost him the Braves' 1957 World Series title, but in the 1958 Series he hit .412 with a Game 1 walk-off single. On August 2, 1959, he hit two bases-loaded triples in a single game. Admired as a quiet leader during baseball's integration era, Bruton was praised by teammate Hank Aaron for his steadying presence.
