About Ray Scarborough

A right-handed pitcher out of Mount Gilead, North Carolina, Ray Scarborough starred at Wake Forest (class of 1942) before signing with the Washington Senators organization and reaching the majors in June 1942. Over 10 big-league seasons he pitched for the Senators (1942-43, 1946-50), Chicago White Sox (1950), Boston Red Sox (1951-52), New York Yankees (1952-53) and Detroit Tigers (1953), compiling an 80-85 record with a 4.13 ERA, 564 strikeouts and 9 shutouts across 318 games. His finest year was 1948, when he went 15-8 with a 2.82 ERA (second-best in the AL) for a last-place Senators club, and he earned his lone All-Star selection in 1950. Sold to the Yankees during the 1952 pennant drive, he went 5-1 down the stretch and rode along to a World Series title, relieving in Game One. Nicknamed the "pitching pickle peddler" for his off-season work at the Mount Olive Pickle Company, Scarborough also famously ended Ted Williams' 84-game on-base streak in September 1949. He later scouted for the Orioles, Angels and Brewers, and died in 1982.
