About Jack Dittmer

A three-sport star at the University of Iowa who was known mainly as a football wide receiver, Jack Dittmer (born January 10, 1928, in Elkader, Iowa) signed with the Boston Braves in 1950 for a $6,000 bonus and reached the majors in June 1952. A left-handed-hitting, right-throwing second baseman, he played six big-league seasons (1952-1957) with the Boston/Milwaukee Braves and, in 1957, the Detroit Tigers. Dittmer holds a footnote in franchise history: he started at second base on April 13, 1953, in the first game the newly relocated Milwaukee Braves ever played, and he was praised for his double-play work alongside shortstop Johnny Logan. Nicknamed "Skinny" for his lean 6-foot-1, roughly 165-pound frame, he batted .232 with 283 hits, 24 home runs, and 136 RBI over 395 games. He was never named an All-Star. After baseball he returned to Elkader to run the family car dealership. This 1953 Topps card (#212) is his rookie card.
