About Gene Conley

One of sport's great two-way athletes, the 6-foot-8 Gene Conley signed with the Boston Braves in 1950 for a $3,000 bonus after starring at Washington State, and pitched 11 major-league seasons (1952-1963) for the Boston/Milwaukee Braves, Philadelphia Phillies, and Boston Red Sox. A right-hander, he went 91-96 with a 3.82 ERA and 888 strikeouts, breaking out in 1954 (14-9, 2.82) to earn All-Star honors and finish third in Rookie of the Year voting. He was an All-Star again in 1955 and 1959, won the 1955 All-Star Game, and in the second 1959 game threw two perfect innings, striking out Ted Williams and Yogi Berra. Conley won the 1957 World Series with Milwaukee, then made history off the diamond: as a forward for the Boston Celtics he captured three straight NBA titles (1959-1961), making him the only athlete ever to win championships in both Major League Baseball and the NBA. This 1953 Topps card (#215) is his rookie issue.
