About Charlie Bishop
Charles Tuller Bishop, a right-handed pitcher born January 1, 1924, in Atlanta, Georgia, signed with the St. Louis Cardinals organization in 1942 and worked his way up through the low minors, his climb interrupted by military service in World War II. A hard-throwing fireballer, the 6-foot-2 Bishop finally reached the majors at age 28, debuting for Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics on August 22, 1952. He pitched four big-league seasons (1952-1955), all with the Athletics franchise as it moved from Philadelphia to Kansas City in 1955. His card #186 in the 1953 Topps set is his rookie card, issued after a promising start in which he shut out the Boston Red Sox in his first outing of the 1953 season and tossed a one-hit shutout in that winter's Caribbean Series. Bishop's best year came in 1954, when he trimmed his ERA to a career-best 4.41. Never quite able to match his minor-league promise, he finished 10-22 with a 5.33 ERA, 121 strikeouts, and one shutout over 69 games (37 starts) and 294 innings. He died July 5, 1993, in Lawrenceville, Georgia.
