About Whitey Ford
Edward Charles "Whitey" Ford, a left-handed pitcher from Manhattan, was signed by the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent in 1947 and spent his entire 16-season career (1950-1967) in pinstripes. He debuted July 1, 1950, and won the Sporting News Rookie of the Year Award, then missed 1951 and 1952 serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War — the return this 1953 Topps card marks with the note "back from two years of military service." Ford went 236-106 with a 2.75 ERA and 1,956 strikeouts, earned 10 All-Star selections, and won the 1961 Cy Young Award with a 25-4 record plus that year's World Series MVP. Anchoring the Yankees' dynasty, he collected six World Series titles and holds the record for most World Series wins (10) and a mark of 33 consecutive scoreless Series innings. Nicknamed "Whitey" for his light-blond hair and "the Chairman of the Board" for his mound poise, he was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1974.
