About Dave Madison
A Louisiana State University alumnus born in Brooksville, Mississippi, David Pledger Madison was a 6-foot-3 right-handed pitcher originally signed by the New York Yankees. He reached the majors with New York in 1950, appearing in just one relief outing in the closing days of that season before serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War in 1951. After his contract was sold to the St. Louis Browns in April 1952, he pitched for the Browns and then the Detroit Tigers, arriving in Detroit as part of the eight-player August 1952 trade that also sent Browns ace Ned Garver to the Tigers. Madison played his final big-league game on August 20, 1953, at age 32. Across three seasons (1950, 1952-53) and 74 games he compiled an 8-7 record with a 5.70 ERA and 70 strikeouts. After his playing days he managed briefly in the Yankees' farm system and spent many years as a scout for the Yankees, Mets, Orioles, and Athletics. He died in Macon, Mississippi, in 1985. His 1953 Topps card (#99) carries a minor cataloged printing variation in which the back biography appears in either white or black text.
