About Hal Newhouser
A Detroit-born left-hander, Hal Newhouser was signed off the local sandlots by Tigers scout Wish Egan in August 1938 for a $500 bonus, famously beating out the Cleveland Indians, who arrived too late with a far richer offer. "Prince Hal" spent his first 15 seasons (1939-1953) with Detroit before finishing with Cleveland (1954-1955). Kept out of World War II by a heart condition, he dominated the war years: he became the first pitcher to win the AL Most Valuable Player Award in back-to-back seasons, taking the 1944 honor (29 wins, 2.22 ERA) and the 1945 award (25 wins, 1.81 ERA), when he captured the pitching Triple Crown. He anchored the Tigers' 1945 World Series title, winning Game 7 over the Chicago Cubs with a ten-strikeout complete game. A seven-time All-Star, Newhouser finished 207-150 with a 3.06 ERA and 1,796 strikeouts. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1992, and Detroit retired his No. 16 in 1997.
