About Don Lund
A Detroit native and standout multi-sport athlete at the University of Michigan, Don Lund lettered in baseball, football, and basketball for the Wolverines before signing with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1945 — turning down pro football after the NFL's Chicago Bears drafted him. A right-handed outfielder who played mostly right field, Lund spent seven big-league seasons with the Dodgers (1945, 1947–48), St. Louis Browns (1948), and Detroit Tigers (1949, 1952–54), retiring with a .240 average, 15 home runs, and 86 RBI in 281 games. His finest year was 1953 — the season captured on this Series 4 high-number rookie card — when he served as Detroit's regular right fielder and set career highs with a .257 average, nine home runs, and 47 RBI. Lund was on the 1947 Dodgers as one of three Montreal Royals promoted alongside Jackie Robinson. After his playing days he coached his alma mater to the 1962 College World Series title, then ran Detroit's farm system, stocking much of the roster that won the 1968 World Series.
