About Eddie Kazak

Born Edward Tkaczuk on July 18, 1920, in Steubenville, Ohio (d. 1999) to Polish immigrant parents, Eddie Kazak simplified his surname as he came up through sandlot ball and the Georgia-Florida League, hitting .378 at Albany in 1941. His path to the majors was interrupted by World War II: near Brest, France in 1944 he was bayoneted through the left arm and had his right elbow shattered by shrapnel, enduring 18 months of surgeries (including a bone-and-plastic elbow repair) before doctors reluctantly cleared him to play. A right-handed third baseman, he reached St. Louis in 1948 and starred as a rookie in 1949, batting .304 with 6 home runs and earning the National League's starting third-base job in the 1949 All-Star Game, where he went 2-for-2 with singles off Mel Parnell and Virgil Trucks. A July ankle injury and later setbacks cut his career short: he played five seasons (1948-1952) with the Cardinals, finishing 1952 with the Cincinnati Reds, and retired with a .273 average, 11 home runs, 71 RBI, and 165 hits over 218 games. Note for collectors: although this 1953 Topps card pictures him with the Detroit Tigers, Kazak never appeared in a game for Detroit.
