About Andy Carey
A cocky, big-bonus prospect, Andy Carey (born 1931 in Oakland, CA; d. 2011) signed with the New York Yankees in 1951 as a "bonus baby" for a reported $60,000 - then the largest bonus the team had ever paid - after attending St. Mary's College of California. The right-handed third baseman debuted in 1952 and became the Yankees' regular at the hot corner from 1954 on, batting a career-best .302 that season and leading the American League with 11 triples in 1955. He is best remembered for two clutch defensive plays that helped preserve Don Larsen's perfect game in the 1956 World Series - knocking down a Jackie Robinson smash and later robbing Gil Hodges with a diving snare of a low liner. Carey was part of the Yankees' 1956 and 1958 world champions before finishing his 11-year career (1952-1962) with the Kansas City Athletics, Chicago White Sox, and Los Angeles Dodgers, retiring with a .260 average, 741 hits, 64 home runs, and 350 RBI. This 1953 Topps card is an early card of his Yankees years.
