About George Spencer

A two-sport athlete who quarterbacked the Ohio State varsity, George Elwell Spencer (1926-2014) was signed off a 1947 Giants workout by Hall of Famer Mel Ott for a $6,000 bonus and worked his way up through Jacksonville, Knoxville, and Triple-A Jersey City. The 6-foot right-hander debuted for the New York Giants on August 17, 1950, and became one of the National League's most dependable relievers in 1951, going 10-4 in 57 appearances and leading the club in saves as the Giants stormed back to catch Brooklyn. He was in the bullpen for Bobby Thomson's pennant-winning "Shot Heard 'Round the World" and pitched in that fall's World Series against the Yankees, once retiring Joe DiMaggio twice in an outing. Spencer pitched for the Giants through 1955 and returned briefly with the Detroit Tigers in 1958 and 1960, finishing 16-10 with a 4.05 ERA, 82 strikeouts, and 122 appearances over eight seasons, mostly in relief. He later coached and scouted before a long career in sheet-metal manufacturing. On the card itself, collectors note a minor back-bio variation for this series-2 issue, with the biography text printed in either black or white.
