About Hoyt Wilhelm

A knuckleball master from Huntersville, North Carolina, Hoyt Wilhelm signed out of the low minors (Mooresville, 1942), earned a Purple Heart in the Battle of the Bulge, and did not debut until age 29 with the New York Giants in 1952. In that rookie season he led the National League with a 2.43 ERA, went 15-3, and famously homered in his very first big-league at-bat—the only home run of his 21-year career. A relief pioneer, he pitched for nine clubs (Giants, Cardinals, Indians, Orioles, White Sox, Angels, Braves, Cubs, Dodgers) through 1972, made eight All-Star teams, and helped the Giants sweep the 1954 World Series. He threw a no-hitter against the Yankees on September 20, 1958, and became the first pitcher to appear in 1,000 games (finishing with 1,070) and to reach 200 saves. Nicknamed "Old Sarge" for his wartime staff-sergeant rank, he finished 143-122 with a 2.52 ERA and 1,610 strikeouts. In 1985 he became the first relief pitcher elected to the Hall of Fame. This series-2 card is known with the back biography printed in either black or white text—a minor catalogued printing variation.
