About Billy Loes
Billy Loes was a right-handed pitcher from Long Island City, New York, who reached the majors with the Brooklyn Dodgers, making his debut on May 18, 1950. Over eleven big-league seasons he pitched for the Dodgers (1950, 1952-56), the Baltimore Orioles (1956-59) and the San Francisco Giants (1960-61), compiling an 80-63 record with a 3.89 ERA and 645 strikeouts across 1,190.1 innings. His finest year came in 1953, when he went 14-8 for the pennant-winning Dodgers, and he was named to the American League All-Star team in 1957. Loes pitched in three World Series for Brooklyn, including the 1955 championship that remains the franchise's only title while based in Brooklyn. He is best remembered for his candor and eccentricity: in the 1952 World Series he lost a Vic Raschi grounder that bounced off his leg, later explaining he "lost it in the sun," and he famously said he never wanted to win 20 games because "then I'd be expected to do it every year." Loes died in 2010.
