1953 Topps #1 Jackie Robinson
1953 Topps #1 Jackie Robinson
The iconic #1 of the set, and a double print. Like every #1 card it is notoriously condition-sensitive after decades atop rubber-banded stacks.

About Jackie Robinson
A four-sport star at UCLA, Jackie Robinson turned pro with the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro American League in 1945 before Brooklyn Dodgers executive Branch Rickey signed him to integrate the game. After a 1946 season starring for the Class AAA Montreal Royals, he debuted with the Dodgers on April 15, 1947, breaking Major League Baseball's color barrier at age 28. Primarily a second baseman (he also played first, third, and the outfield), Robinson won the inaugural Rookie of the Year award in 1947, then captured the 1949 National League MVP and batting title with a .342 mark. A six-time All-Star, he was a daring baserunner famous for stealing home. Over 10 seasons, all with Brooklyn, he batted .311 with 137 home runs, 734 RBI, and 197 stolen bases, and helped the Dodgers win their lone Brooklyn World Series in 1955. He was elected to the Hall of Fame on the first ballot in 1962, and in 1997 his No. 42 was retired across all of baseball. This iconic #1 card—a double print in the set—remains the flagship of 1953 Topps.

Double Print
Marked DP. Roughly 50% more of these cards were printed than their neighbors (the hobby calls it 'double-printed'), so they are the most plentiful cards in the set. TCDB flags 103 of them, concentrated in the low series. Five cards normally in the low run - #94, #107, #131, #145 and #156 - were also printed on the more-plentiful #166-220 sheet. A print-quantity designation, not an error or a separate card.
