1953 Topps #176 Don Hoak

About Don Hoak
Donald Albert "Tiger" Hoak signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947 after a Navy discharge and climbed their farm system on grit, glove and speed, reaching Triple-A Montreal before debuting in 1954. This card is his rookie issue with Brooklyn, where he was a right-handed third baseman; over 11 major-league seasons (1954-1964) he also played for the Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Redlegs, Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia Phillies, batting .265 with 89 home runs and 498 RBI. His lone All-Star selection came in 1957 with Cincinnati, when he led the National League with 39 doubles. Remarkably, Hoak started Game 7 of two World Series and won both: he manned third for the 1955 Dodgers in place of Jackie Robinson (the set's #1 card), then hit .282 for the 1960 Pirates and finished runner-up for NL MVP to teammate Dick Groat. His throwing error ended Harvey Haddix's perfect game after 12 innings on May 26, 1959. Pirates broadcaster Bob Prince nicknamed him "Tiger" for his ferocity. Hoak died October 9, 1969, at 41, of a heart attack suffered while chasing a car thief in Pittsburgh.
