About Bobby Morgan
Robert Morris "Bobby" Morgan (1926-2023) was a right-handed infielder from Oklahoma City who signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers out of Classen High School in 1944, then served in the European Theater during World War II before resuming his career. He announced himself in the minors with a monster 1949 season for the Triple-A Montreal Royals, winning the International League batting crown at .337 with 112 RBI and taking league MVP honors. Reaching Brooklyn in 1950, Morgan spent his Dodgers years as a versatile utility infielder buried behind Hall of Famers Pee Wee Reese and Jackie Robinson and All-Star Gil Hodges, and he appeared in the 1952 and 1953 World Series, lining out as a pinch-hitter in Game 7 of the 1952 Series against the Yankees' Bob Kuzava. Traded to the Phillies in 1954, he set career bests as Philadelphia's starting shortstop that year, hitting .262 with 14 home runs and 50 RBI. Over eight big-league seasons (1950-1958) with the Dodgers, Phillies, Cardinals and Cubs he batted .233 with 487 hits, 53 home runs and 217 RBI, later managing and scouting in pro ball.
